Content Management

About how to manage content in Joomla: articles, menus, categories, modules.

Articles

Articles are the foundation of content creation in Joomla. They are used to publish text, images, links, media, and other elements that make up the pages of your website. Whether you are building a simple blog, a news portal, or a large organizational site, articles provide the flexibility and structure needed to manage your content effectively.

In Joomla, articles can be organized into categories, displayed in different layouts, featured on your homepage, or restricted to specific users. You can format them with headings, tables, and images, configure publishing details, and even track different versions over time. This section of the user manual will guide you through all the tools and options available for managing articles.

Managing Articles

Focuses on creating, organizing, and maintaining your content library.

Efficient article management ensures your site stays organized and up to date. Joomla provides tools for grouping articles into categories, applying filters for easy searching, and highlighting or archiving content as needed. You can also permanently delete content that is no longer required.

  • Categories – Organize articles into logical groups for easier navigation and structure.

  • Filter Options – Quickly search, sort, and locate articles in the backend.

  • Featured – Highlight selected articles to display prominently on your site.

  • Archive – Store older content without deleting it from the system.

  • Delete – Permanently remove articles you no longer need.

Learn how to structure, format, and enrich your articles for better readability and user experience.

Presentation matters when publishing content. Joomla provides a wide range of formatting tools to make your articles clear, accessible, and visually appealing. From basic text formatting to advanced options like pagination and embedded links, these features allow you to craft professional-looking articles.

  • Article Content – Add and edit the main body of your article.

  • Headings, Lists, and Tables – Structure your content for clarity and emphasis.

  • Images and Links – Add media and references to support your content.

  • Pagination & Read More – Split long articles into manageable sections for easier reading.

  • Images and Links Tab – Control how additional images and links are displayed within your articles.

Article Options & Publishing

Fine-tune how articles behave, appear, and are made available to readers.

Beyond writing content, Joomla allows you to manage how each article is published and displayed. You can adjust publishing dates, add metadata for SEO, configure author details, and customize the article edit screen for your workflow.

  • Article Options – Control layout, display settings, and article behavior.

  • Publishing Options – Manage publication status, scheduling, and author details.

  • Metadata – Add meta descriptions, keywords, and other SEO information.

  • Configure Edit Screen – Tailor the article editing interface to your needs.

Access & Permissions

Control who can view, edit, or manage your articles.

Joomla offers powerful access control features. You can assign permissions to specific user groups, restrict content visibility, and ensure that only authorized users can create, edit, or delete articles.

  • Permissions – Define user group capabilities for creating and managing articles.

  • Access Restrictions – Limit article visibility based on access levels.

Additional Tools

Make use of extra features to improve workflow, maintain content history, and enhance presentation.

Joomla includes a variety of helpful tools that go beyond basic article creation. These features support better site navigation, accessibility, and content quality.

  • Save to Menu – Link articles directly to menus for quick access.

  • Versions – Track changes and restore previous versions of articles.

  • Preview – See how an article will look before publishing it live.

  • Accessibility Check – Ensure your content is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities.

With these tools and options, Joomla’s article system gives you complete control over how your content is created, managed, formatted, and displayed—making it suitable for both small sites and large, content-rich platforms.

Tags

Tags are hidden labels or keywords that you can assign to items on your Joomla site. They allow Joomla to filter and display content based on the tags applied, making it easier to organize and present related items.

Unlike Categories, which are required and limited to one per item, Tags are optional and multiple can be assigned to a single item. Tags also offer greater flexibility—they can be applied across various content types such as articles, categories, contacts, and newsfeeds, allowing you to display all tagged items together, regardless of type.

Tags can be organized hierarchically (parent/child) for better structure. When tags appear on a page as buttons or hyperlinks, clicking them takes users to a page listing all items associated with that tag.
